The 176 pages of Never Beat the Boss… consist of 10 chapters (or "innings" – that's what a division of play is called in horseshoes). Each inning includes several stories of 225 to 300 words, 102 stories in all. Every story begins with a powerful quotation which is illustrated by an engaging vignette. The vignette may be historical or biographical or whimsical or humorous. In all cases the goal of each page is the same as the goal of throwing a ringer in the game of horseshoes – to make you feel better than you did before you experienced it, to make you want to experience another, and to win the game – in this case, the game of life.
